The street art in the UNESCO heritage area of George Town is a major drawcard for tourists visiting Penang, Malaysia. The following is a small selection of works I’ve managed to photograph so far (taken during 2015 and 2016).
I’m hoping to add more to this collection in the near future, so stay tuned for an update to this post! You can also view all the photos here as a slideshow by clicking on any image below.
UPDATE (July 2017) – You can find Volume 2 of my ‘George Town, Penang Street Art Collection’ here.
Little Children on a Bicycle by Ernest Zacharevic
The mural above is possibly the most well known. Entitled “Little Children on a Bicycle”, it was created by artist Ernest Zacharevic, and is one of several of his works on display in the city. It is located on Lebuh Armenian (Armenian Road).
Boy on a Bike by Ernest Zacharevic
Another one by Ernest Zacharevic…this mural is entitled “Boy on a Bike” and is located on Ah Quee Street.
Harmony (title and artist unknown)
This one reminds me of my time growing up in Malaysia, when I had friends in primary school who were Chinese, Malay and Indian. The differences in our cultures and backgrounds were never an issue, and we all got along, bonding over our common interests (at that time they mainly revolved around football, and Star Wars!).
This particular street art can be found on Lebuh Armenian.
Cats and Humans Happily Living Together (artist unknown)
This mural is located in a courtyard within Cheah Kongsi, one of the five main Hokkien clan houses in Penang.
27 – (title and artist unknown)
Portrait of a Malaysian football player, located on Lebuh Ah Quee.
Reaching Up by Ernest Zacharevic
“Reaching Up” is one of several murals created by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic in George Town, Penang. This particular one is located on Cannon Street just outside a cafe.
The Indian Boatman by Julia Volchkova
The Indian Boatman”, by Russian born artist Julia Volchkova, is a mural located on Lebuh Klang. It’s one of my favourites and prompted a return to the street later in the evening so I could capture it at nighttime.
Grand Swiss Hotel Murals by Yakuzart Creation
Finally, a couple of murals of Mr Bean and Marilyn Monroe located just in front of the Grand Swiss Hotel on Lebuh Chulia.
Nice set of photos.
Thanks very much, Edward! Appreciate it.
